I don't want to get yuuuuge spacers (17mm? just no!) and I'm looking at the 5mm H&R Spacers which come with extended studs. Are the studs needed for such a small spacing ?

From memory 6mm spacers are ok, anything more and you need longer studs or hubcentric spacers

Like Russell says you're good upto 6mm on standard studs/centrebore.

They fit perfectly and are a wheel Team Dynamics developed specifically for the spec miata guys in the states. They are therefore a pukka MX5 race wheel.

I used the same method, same wheel. Fit very easily over the front and rear calipers (my rear ones have more clearance issues that the front).
