Thought I ought to put up some pics of my spoilers and bootlids, so you can see what I'm talking about ...
I guess it makes sense to show how it all started first ...
Seems crazy looking back on it, but this is the first spoiler I ever made, out of cardboard and gaffa tape!
It's obviously very basic, but it's the side shot that made me think I was onto something.

The guy in the pic is John from Vindicator cars, I'd made 3 of his kit cars, and he helped me out massively with starting up making the spoilers as he's familiar with Fibreglass and making moulds
So next I fleshed it out a bit and made a proper shape, think this was the last stage before it was sent off to make into a mould. The top was left "sharp" so it was easier to see the lines and check it was ok before the shape was smoothed off.
So next stage was making a plug, expensive stuff!!
and from that a spoiler was born ...
which I attached straight onto my car that night so I could show it off at the Phoenix Fives meet the next day!! 
Came out pretty nice in the end ...
So that was back in 2009, little did I know it would take off so much!!

Seeing the amazing job that Sanson had done was the nudge I needed to make a full bootlid. Making a full bootlid was always the intention, but I knew the cost of making the moulds would be high, so it was a couple of years until I started into it. The first attempt was ok, but was sitting too high for some reason
It took a lot of time to get the levels and panel gaps right, make one ... test fit it, make slight adjustments, remake the mould, start again ... but was totally worth it!
You can see some of the notes written on the bootlid below, I think there were 3 bootlids made before I was happy it all lined up as I wanted it to. Then was a test phase, where a few more changes were made to make sure the bootlid was strong and stiff enough to cope with being driven around.
The bootlid is all fibreglass, and weighs in at about 4.5kg, giving a decent weight saving over the standard boot. It uses the standard hinges and boot latch, so is literally a 5 minute job to fit. It's 2 separate moulds to make, one for the top that makes this: 
Then a second mould to make the underside, which makes this: 
Which is then cut out to make this: 
And then it's all joined together and smoothed off, ready to be fitted.
One I made in carbon ... 2.2kg, yum!!

The process to make the Mk2 spoiler was a lot simpler, we already had the basic shape so I bought a cheap Mk2 and chucked it at the pattern maker. He took off the bootlid and grafted a Mk1 spoiler onto it. After a bit of reshaping, it looked pretty good
So I went ahead and made a mould ... first person to have one was Stevo9000 ... not sure if he still has it, this was after he'd got it sprayed some time in 2010
The shape was always a bit high at the sides, so I'm remaking the mould at the moment and doing a bit of reshaping to improve it

I compete in roadgoing hillclimb and sprints and in theory, the silhouette of the car has to remain standard although I know Nick gets away with the spoiler on his supercharged car. if you do know who does, it would be good to find out, even a single skinned one would be good. How much am i looking at for a full bootlid for a mk1?? Full fibreglass ducktail bootlid is £325, they take about 3 weeks to make and weigh about 4.5kg. Only doing them in white at the moment Russell |
