If you go to the lengths of draining the coolant and taking the water pump inlet off then take the alternator belt off too and you can turn the water pump pulley by hand. But I'm not convinced lack of circulation is the issue. It sounds more like overcooling which suggests the new thermostat isn't closing when it should.
Standard coolant path or reroute? And does the temp gauge show the same drop in heat that the heater suffers?
There's also the resistance that you said you felt in moving the heat/cool slider: did you get to the bottom of that?
