Yeah, my garage lamp died so this is the best I can do right now, this is the nose of it. Can't really get a full shot of the thing so I'll have another look tomorrow. I know for sure it doesn't have the damper and I'm 99.99% sure its a 6" diff... Diffential - ユーノス ロードスタ S-SPECIAL NA6CE by batousan, on Flickr I've read those guides a lot, and I can't find any references to the square flanges, basically the front nose and the flanges look just like this: It was this post by Zed. that got me curious as I simply thought the import eunos 91-93 all had VLSDs but it was the square drive flange comment that got me thinking as that rung a bell, sure enough when I looked both of mine were as he described... sourcing a used VLSD housing instead of a a 1.8 diff, shafts and prop just to be pedantic... the vlsd uses 2 different length output flanges, one has two different spline diameters so vlsd specific. the MM plate diffs generally have a square drive-flange but I believe they are dimensionally identical to the sculpted-flange shaped versions as fitted to the 6" open diffs

batou. if you've got those 'square' flanges then you've probably got a Mazdamotorsport plate lsd in the 6" diff, chances are it acts as an 'open' diff with wheels turning in opposite directions and seems to 'lock' when given the beans? it'll also be needing a service by now as it's old & definately worn not all 7" diffs have the harmonic-dampner thinggy on the input flange, think auto cars didnt have them & maybe low-power 1.6 cars? Rich.

Interesting! Yeah, it seems to be much more noticeable since I've had it aligned and its been cold just as you describe! I always thought the "VLSD" I thought I had was better than people gave credit, as it turns out I never had one lol! Should have been using different oil? I've used Systrans 75W90 previously. When you say "service" does this mean "replace it with a shiny new 1.5/2way" or is there an actual overhaul kit procedure for it? Its been about 50km since I changed the gearbox and diff oil so was planning on doing this at somepoint, most likely when I drop the gearbox as I have a leak from the bell housing and also on the prop near where the turret is under the car.

Rich.

Yeah thats what I was worried about, as I had no idea it was this type of diff its just been treated with the normal intervals so it will most certainly be in need of a service/overhaul for sure! I've changed it previously, yep really easy job. Ahh, I wasn't sure if it was possible to rebuild it as where would I get new plates etc? If this is indeed serviceable I won't be wasting money on a new one . Normally with plate diffs from tomei, cusco, os g, kaaz etc you can usually buy an overhaul kit?

I read somewhere - maybe the spec-miata pages that the mm diff was a kazz but don't quote me on that plates can be easily made if needed, or ground & shimmed theres no high tec. workings in a friction-clutch setup Rich.

sadly getting nice 7" ones and all the relevant bits takes a fair bit of effort and cash. What makes you recon it's a Mazdaspeed one ? Zed. ?

I've been scouring minkara.carview and trying to decifer the bad translations, as it turns out there are a few references to it there and it appears the part number reference for the 2WAY version is N1064A. Have also seen reference to a Kaaz diff in a housing with the same square shafts too so that might indicate your correct there. Haha, well certainly I need to do some reading on this then, I assumed you'd need specific plates but yeah, your right, its just friction material nothing fancy . Edit. Also found this: Maruhamotors Mazdaspeed LSD O / H

What makes you recon it's a Mazda motorsport one ? Zed. ? edited for you or is it Mazda competition? depends on where you find mention & their references... anyway, thought Mazdaspeed was a bit later? some reading on a thread by this threads origonal poster, archmatux mighty5s.com/post/40172/threadand its following post (by mouthalmighty me naturally ) this is from Mazda Miata performance handbook. and I've read untold about them, did wonder if they were uber-rare jdm goodness that would pay-off my mortgage but the jury is still out on this Rich.

I have beenstripping this diff down with the so called square flanges. The shafts however are two different lengths and the core is not a Mazdaspeed clutch type one. Any help?

Any pictures of the teardown? The jury is still out on what the defining features are and given there is little to no information on the square shafted diffs other than pointing at the mazda comp / speed diff then its hard to know without a teardown.

theres further developments in the knowledge-base re. the infamous square-flanges...... theres a plate LSD to fit the early 6" diff on ebay in Japan, listed under the title: 'JDM MAZDASPEED 2WAY LSD Clutch Plate type Mazda NA Miata MX-5 Limited slip diff' www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JDM-MAZDASPEED-2WAY-LSD-Clutch-Plate-type-Mazda-NA-Miata-MX-5-Limited-slip-diff/184540788618this has the conventional 'open' diff type flanges with the equil 'bunny-ears' 8 bolt crownwheel - diff so early NA 6" diff. bad photo so cannot see if the cages are 1, 1.5 or 2 way (advertised as 2 way?) anyway, I've been stalked on fb messanger and seen photos of a square flange diff that has the double spline of the vlsd & after looking at internot photo's the diff-spool looks like a vlsd (imbarassingly I didn't recognise it as such as from what I remember of seeing a vlsd it was different * - no pun intended ) guessing this was the diff dmbworks is refering to I'll post images later for reference also, these early 6" diffs have their origins in the rear of the Mazda 323 4x4 Turbo so theres probably more combinations of diff / flange out there in the wild Rich. * was a dead diff & I was scrapping it but keeping the alloy case so not interested

okey, I'll match you & raise... some reserch into the '323 4x4 turbo (looking in the workshop manual) shows the rear 'axle'... same diff unit but different casings. (note the output flanges?) tec. stuff.... they use a 3.909:1 final drive so possibly good to 'up-gear' the early 6" equiped Mx5 that had 4.3:1 and, totally un-related to the origonal post topic but the Mx5's heratage... and the nightmare of an 80's oem turbo engine... Rich.
