I'm currently running a '99 mk2 engine in my mk1 with an ME221. The car drives great but I'd love it to sound a bit better, I'm running a racing beat exhaust manifold matched to a silenced decat, but still have a standard cat-back exhaust for the rest of the system. I did briefly try a Cobalt exhaust but the drone was awful once the car got up to temperature so it came off and was sold. I have been running a K&N typhoon for the intake but due to heat-soak issues I've reverted back to a standard airbox.
The MX5parts exhausts seem to have a bad reputation for noise, plus the fact that I had to return two of their manifolds in the past has put me off buying an MX5parts exhaust. So here's the question, are there any cat-back exhausts that are not stupidly loud or drone excessively but just give a nicer sound?

AK Automotive systems sound lovely. I agree! I think they might only be for the 1.6, and then only with a de-cat arrangment, though?? Could be worth giving them a ring to check!

I 'fixed' the cobalt on my car went from horrible loud to being able to hear the induction by 'fixed' I removed the stupid tailpipe & replaced it with plain pipe (hacksaw & tig to the rescue ) as to other exhaust recomendations, sorry but I'm of no help there Rich. ps. anyone want a cobalt stainless tailpipe?

Any pics? Having trouble visualising this or understanding how it might make a difference. Cobalts do mellow out considerable with some use. After a couple of months the worst drone was gone. Then its ok for a year or two as the packing slowly burns away. Then its back to droning.

After reading lot's of positive reviews on here & Pistonheads I've booked in next week at Infinity Exhausts for a cat-back to be fitted next week, quite looking forward to someone else working on the car rather than me!

I have heard good things about Infinity exhausts, anyone have experience of them? I've used them a few times - I currently have a cat back straight through pipe and small silencer from them, very good work, you can watch them do it. Basically they'll make you whatever you want.

It would be good to hear how that goes.
Regarding the AK system. I remember seeing a Nutz thread a while back about the system that mentioned dyno testing during the development. Are there any graphs or anything knocking around on the web that show this? I have looked but couldn't find any.

Not that loud really. I think it was around 90db at 5fest last year. I have a Racing Beat manifold, and still have the cat. The cowl intake makes as much noise inside the car.......Disclaimer: I'm deaf in one ear, and wear earplugs when driving the 5
