Is there much to be had from headwork? Or is this an exercise to find out? Nice getting the extra HLAs, those things are pricey as hell as a set. This would be my choice

This would be my choice That might be one of the only times my missus sees me load and empty the dishwasher. lol. I think it depends on how 'good' the head you've got is. From reading and speaking to people that race them it appears some heads flow better than others. Not quite sure why this is but probably production tolerances? As the rules don't allow porting their is more emphasis on the initial selection using flow bench data. I was surprised by the HLAs too as I got a whole set - and looking online they are easily worth more than what I paid for the head. A useful thing for the spares cupboard. I could be totally wrong but I think that headwork could yield around 10-15hp possibly more with other modifications. This is working on the basis that a stock 1.6 car produces around 115-ish bhp at the fly and most mk1 race cars produce 130-140 bhp at the fly using standard induction and exhaust manifold.

I cleaned up the head a bit more. I'll try and take some pictures of the ports tomorrow in daylight.
I used vernier calipers to measure the head thickness and got about 132.6mm ish... So definitely skimmed.
I'm planning to take it to get checked over more thoroughly but I attempted a light test to check how well the valves are seated. All but one showed no light. This valve seemed to sit slightly more proud of it's seat than the others.

This would be my choice Generally speaking, almost everything that can be gained from MX5 engines is in the head. I know of a couple of 200bhp 1.8 engines where the block hasn't been touched apart from an aftermarket damper pulley being bolted on Russell

More pictures. Not really sure what I'm looking at but I'm taking it to get looked at by an engineering company down the road from me. Apologies for potato quality.

Minor update - acquiring gaskets and seals for head swap Why is genuine Mazda stuff HEINOUSLY expensive! The valve stem seals in particular are ridiculous as no oem alternative seems to work. In the next couple of days I plan to disassemble and clean all the tappets I got with the head as they are notorious for holding old grimey deposits.

That's a drastic skim, this is my head with a 20thou skim on it: IMG_20200527_202314 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Deck height should be 133.8-134mm Feel your pain with the OEM valve stem seals, but don't try go aftermarket, it's not worth the time or hassle! I think Mx5parts were due a shipment around now, they had the better prices I could find but were out of stock when I needed them.

Yeah not sure what skim it's had exactly but I did find other pictures of a blink race head online and it looked very much the same.
Doing some reading and they run the race heads at a higher compression ratio as they can't port them within the rules.

Yeah so, not much to report. Disassembly, soaking in part cleaner and rebuilding the tappets in fresh oil. Taking longer than expected but definitely worth doing now. The sourcing of gaskets also continues....

Does anyone know where you can get the little plastic sleeves that go on the end of the valve stem to protect the seal as it is installed over the recess where the collets sit?
They don't seem to be a thing I can find.

I've a few from Elring hg sets in a draw but iirc they're for 7mm stems (vw diesel) so no use to you Mazda B6 has 6mm valvestems... the inferior 1.8 has 7mm (& similar diameter valve heads & spring pressures!) I can post one if you want it?? Rich.
