Had a whirlwind visit to Cornwall over the weekend to do the Watergate Bay Sprint, near Newquay. Brilliant having a chance to go all out on a public road, every run I did was faster than the previous one, and nothing broke! I was slowest in the class on Saturday, but beat a couple of people on Sunday (my excuse about the capacity limit being 1800 doesn't quite work when the double driven Peugeot 106 that came 2nd and 3rd also ran with a 1600 engine...)
One of the sunny runs from Sunday here:

I hope you did your Dad Proud and had fun. I did the first hillclimb there. You can now understand why I want to do a short stroke crank to drop the capacity but upping the bore size to 85mm
Nice Vid interesting chicanery.
Maybe I will enter next year in one of the cars.

You can now understand why I want to do a short stroke crank to drop the capacity but upping the bore size to 85mm Dad is talking about persuading them to have a vintage class if they run it as a sprint again next year – most of the competitors I spoke to said the sprint was better than the hill course, and it was much better for spectating too.
What capacity would you be aiming for, 1799?

Hi, I would be looking for 1796cc by using Bore@85mm Stroke@79.126mm and hoping to spin it over 8500 Rpm
This will be a custom crank and rod set up using a Mk2.5 Block.
I have been collecting supporting componants for a while now.
I am about to collect some Laser Welded parts for the other car this week so I will have to wait till the toy fund is filled up again.

Did a 2 day sprint at Blyton last weekend. Saturday was the Eastern Circuit & Sunday the outer. I never really got to grips with the eastern, but Sunday was much better on the outer.

Nice comedy swearing at yourself! The Eastern layout did look a bit confusing, Outer certainly seemed to flow better. How did you do in your class?

Little write up on my final race weekend of the year up at the Boyndie sprint competing with Eunos Ecosse - It was set to be a good event with lots of MX5's competing and 18 drivers ready to throw them round the track!
It was my first time competing at Boyndie but a trackday in 2020 meant I at least knew where the track went, despite that I still almost went straight on at the first corner on the first run but I'll blame the cold brakes for that! My second practice run was a 72.28 and second fastest of the MX5's with Andy Connell fastest as usual but only 0.2 secs ahead, the third and final practice seen me improve slightly with a 72.22 but also included a missed gear shift so I was confident there was still a little more there.
With the practice runs done it was very close throughout when comparing the best runs so far; Andy - 72.09 Myself - 72.22 Jim King - 72.25 Ross Glen - 72.62 Keith Rose - 73.05
Missing from the front runners was Neil Girdwood whose new car was clearly wheezing round the track, over lunch there were plenty of Eunos Ecosse members (amongst others) around his car giving advice to try and find the problem - and some even helping on the tools!
After lunch the competition runs would start so the previous runs now meant nothing, with 3 runs to get a time in I thought I'd put a smooth run in for the first one but took it too easy and set only a 73.26. With Jim, Ross and Keith all setting times under 73 seconds I had to do better on the next one, especially with Andy dipping under 72 seconds with a 71.94.
No more taking it easy, the mazda's need to be thrown about a bit to get the best time...
A 72.08 was good but just not quite good enough to catch Andy. Watching the others after my run it was great to see everyone else really pushing the cars... and some the track limits/cones marking them, Ross doing a good job taking a number of them out on his way! It was only after that I found out I'd done the same on my previous run and given the marshals some extra work to do (and held up the other mazdas on the line - sorry Fiona Webster!). So onto the final run of the day, I was still in second just 0.14 seconds from Andy's time and knew it was within reach if I nailed the run but of course the others behind me could still jump ahead. The usual suspects from the morning were very close and Bob Yuill and James Plenderleath were also right there in the 73's (and both very entertaining to watch!). Neil's car had not improved so he was out for the day though.
Unfortunately I tried too hard on that last run and hit the cone on the second corner but this time pulled it onto the track behind me meaning it would've been there on the second lap, so I was red flagged and that was it, a frustrating mistake (and another scrape on the car!).
I watched nervously as the others improved on their runs but I just kept ahead of the pack with only Andy's time better than my own, so it finished:
Andy - 71.94 Myself - 72.08 Ross - 72.26 Jim - 72.36 Keith - 72.63 James - 73.87 Bob Snr -73.89 Brilliant close racing and all to play for again on Sunday... On Sunday we were joined by Robert Yuill making 18 runners in class A9 and Dom M-ski in his MK3 MX5 in A8. The track is the same layout on Sunday so nothing new to learn, just straight back on it! However there would only be two practice runs and crucially one competitive run before lunch when the best times are normally set. My first run of the day was a reasonable 72.60 and the second a 72.04, edging ever close to the 71sec mark;
It was once again very close after the practice runs and I found myself top of the pack, Bob Jnr was looking quick straight out and Neil's car was now performing as it should be. The scores on the doors were; Myself - 72.04 Andy - 72.25 Bob jnr - 72.47 Ross - 72.49 Jim - 72.63 Neil - 73.17
So close! But again the practice runs mean nothing...
Onto the competition runs and my first was a disappointing 72.64, as usual Andy was flying and back into the 71's with a 71.88. Ross was close with a 72.12 after deciding not to just drift or kill cones. Keith was looking fast too with a 72.34. My second run wasn't much of an improvement with a 72.50, I was struggling to match the times I was doing in the morning but unfortunately others weren't and I was now sitting 5th overall. Again the final run needed to be a good one - without any cones getting involved. I managed to get back down to a 72.16 just sneaking past Neil's previous 72.17 but not quite getting Ross, Andy was secure in 1st being the only one under 72seconds. I was happy with 3rd place though if the others didn't improve further... Keith was looking close to getting right up there until a spin spoiled his final run. Neil did improve though, despite his car running less than an ideal suspension set up he just pipped me with a 72.15. So that was it... Until Bob jnr as the final MX5 runner nailed his run with a brilliant 71.23 and stole first place, definitely saved the best till last! Sunday's final order was; Bob jnr - 71.23 Andy - 71.88 Ross - 72.12 Neil - 72.15 Myself - 72.16 Keith - 72.34 Dom (Class A8) - 72.35 Jim - 73.10 James - 73.82 Ian Archibald - 73.94 Bob Snr - 74.06 Sandy Donaldson - 74.59 Robert Hardy - 75.54 Graeme Webster - 77.29 Fiona Webster -77.66 Matthew Mackenzie - 80.56 Ryan Mackenzie - 81.31
Great close racing through the pack and some great rivalries! Also thanks to Lynn Glen for keeping us all in check and keeping the times for Eunos Ecosse.
Hopefully it continues again in 2022.

mrwallace, great write up, seems to be a very competitive class. I've only been round Boyndie in a go-kart but even so it was great fun, looks just as good in a 5.

Nice comedy swearing at yourself! The Eastern layout did look a bit confusing, Outer certainly seemed to flow better. How did you do in your class? Eastern track is better IMO particularly in a slow car like an MX-5, Howards is no longer a slow 5 I suppose and perhaps why he prefers the all out blast of the other track. Good runs though Howard, CM class all looked pretty quick on that day looking at the times. You want to get all Carlos Fandango mate you were struggling for grip

Oh yes that reminds me howardb66, have you got some sort of gimbal mount for your camera? My GoPro is mounted on the roll bar but gets a lot of vibration/noise, yours looked much smoother.

Nice comedy swearing at yourself! The Eastern layout did look a bit confusing, Outer certainly seemed to flow better. How did you do in your class? Was 5th on Saturday, which is my worst of the season & rubbish points too (23.32) but Sunday was much better as I was 3rd with 24.61 . Was beaten on handicap by a MK3 both days which has cams, skimmed head, proper exhaust, cold air intake, remap, etc etc which has a declared 200hp…. I was 0.9 faster Saturday & 2.1 seconds quicker Sunday but he did me because of his ‘declared power’. Am now in the top 3 out of 63 drivers. Should be going to Goodwood this Saturday but that looks doubtful as I’ve only got fumes in the tank….
