Does anyone know if there’s a UK equivalent to these guys? sorry but no idea (I build gearboxes amongst other things so wouldn't look ) I like the 5 speed transmission & wondered if there’s a way of making it last a little longer when running a bit more power. the gearbox is actually quite easy to strip & rebuild so maybe have a go yourself? as to upgrades / strengthening, cryo treatment of gears is easily done. stronger / larger fastenings can be easily sourced. the same basic 5 speed gearbox lived on into mk3 mx5's so the chances are that the 'CARBON/MOLY SYNCHROS' are possibly oem Mazda parts? another option could be to fit mk3 Mx5 gearbox into your bellhousing / front casing? ^^this is presuming the newer gearboxes are better built with better materials (& less millage so less wear?) Rich.

My 5 speed survived many years of abuse including multiple trackdays at around 275BHP, launch control launches at Prescott etc etc so if you have a decent one, I'd imagine you will be alright... 5 speeds are cheap as chips as well - I'd see how you get on and if you start to break them regularly look into it a bit more... 6 speed doesn't feel very nice compared

I’v helped a friend with his SC 6 speed car & thought the change was pretty good when I had a go on a sprint circuit. The symptom I have at the moment is that there is a rattle through the gear shift from about 2000 to 4000 rpm in 3rd & 4th gears. Have had the turret apart in the last month & the oil in it is fresh as is the nylon bush. It could be harmonics through the short shifter I suppose. I could always refit the original lever as an experiment 💡. Anyway, this afternoon’s fun is going to be gearbox oil change with some of that shockproof stuff(50% mix).

IIRC some of the short shifters are known to rattle, especially if they have metal bushings rather than nylon/delrin. If you keep your hand on the shifter does it stop rattling?
The shift on my 6 speed isn't as smooth as my 5 speed was, much notchier. On hard shifts from 4-5 under heavy load when the box is hot it will sometimes refuse to go into gear and then won't let you select any gears until a few presses of the clutch pedal later, which I understand is a bent shifter fork issue. It may be my box just isn't great though. The miataroadsters short shift kit, supermiata hybrid engine mounts helped but it's not 'enjoyable' like the 5 speed was. At some point I'll probably look for another one. Or the Tailgate McNoIndicate box kit. Or just sell the car as it's been sat in the garage for 18 months without being touched and I've kinda lost enthusiasm at the moment!

jon It’s a nylon bush on the bottom of the shifter which has done less than 10k. I’ll experiment with hand pressure whilst it rattling- thanks. I failed on the oil change; spoke to my friendly local garage & they said I could do it on their ramp next week after they finish. Get the car out & come do some sprints/hillclimbs! Think we’ve got 10-12 MX5s entered in the Classic Marques Speed Championships this season- if you want any more info just PM.

I should get it sorted for the summer really - I took it off the road Jan last year with the aim of taking the bumpers off, undersealing it all and tidying the odd tatty bits up, but 14 months later I've barely touched it - what with Covid it just wasn't worth taxing it as I couldn't drive it.. ref. competitions - I have too little talent and the car has too much power. I'd either bin it on the first corner or beat myself up for being at the bottom of the table all of the time

Howard. Take a look at DaveFab gearbox cooler they had great results the other year with that at the Nurburgring. I also cradled mine with an exoskeleton and that stood up really well to 300FtLbs.
The 2.0lt gearbox from a MK3 is NOT the one to use. The best box came in from the 3.5 on. But the ratios? The early box is ok for normal use only. Speak to Roddison!!!! He's a touch upset with MX-5 boxes.
Regards. Rich.
