I have no idea what this means, sorry Rich can elaborate anyway, I'd suggest general recomissioning / repair (if its been parked up for a while) before modifying, then suspension & brakes - pointless having ~250hp if it wont go around a corner or a suspension component falls off the later, post '93/4 (90hp?) mk1 1.6L engine is a detuned unit compared to the earlier 115hp B6ZE(RS) BUT this is perfect for forced-induction (the 1.6L has its roots in the 1980's Mazda323 Turbo 4x4's B6T engine) Also.... Rich.

Little update... And some big news, it's the 1.8 not the 1.6! Got around to go and have a look over the old Mazda, some good things, some less good things... So firstly, although it's P reg, turns out it was registered in 1997, So it's a mrk 1, 1997, 1.8 si, in several shades of red 🤣. Turns out wannabe, you're quite right, it's not that rare, there is some pretty bad rust, both rear sills are rotted through. Both front sills look good and shining a light through the door crease they look clean inside too. One other spot of rust on the driver's door otherwise pretty rust free. Discs and pads are new, (2019). howardb66, this should give you a laugh, both rear tyres are quite new (some sarcasm), date stamped in 0115, however both front wheels are old enough to leave home and get a job, 0806!!! So new tyres and wheel alignment are a top priority. Started first time, to an array of horrible chirping noises, I'm guessing clutch or something, once they had finished another noise persisted for a while which sounded like valves clicking but all noises went away after a few minutes of tick over. Drive wise it felt ok other than some pretty bad steering judder, hoping this is just perished tyres and lack of wheel alignment. Looks like the cam cover gasket is leaking, which gives me an excuse to take it off, clean and paint it red, while changing the gasket. Was planning on taking it to, total mx5 repair, in Barry as they seem well reviewed and close enough to me, Bristol. Anyone any other recommendations or heard good/bad things about TMR?? Next steps are tyres, alignment, MOT, root out the rot! I'm trying to upload pics but am currently hampered by the 1mb limit!

Also,
I meant to ask, is the air intake on this standard? Looks odd to me, there is a section of Flexi what looks like extractor ducting and it's taking the air from almost up against the chassis and nowhere near any ounce of fresh air???

Hmmm, it might be an idea to get the rust as a priority before spending money on anything else. It could need some major surgery…

Looks odd to me, there is a section of Flexi what looks like extractor ducting and it's taking the air from almost up against the chassis and nowhere near any ounce of fresh air??? Does it connect to a hole in the wheel arch? The standard air intake (across the front) means the air is picked up from the passenger side next to the exhaust manifold, so it is warm and not very fresh. That arrangement on yours is probably trying to get colder air into the engine - some people connect it to a hose that collects air from behind the bulkhead near the windscreen washer bottle.
