FFS, I thought I might get through this month without something breaking but Noooooooo...
I was driving back yesterday, did a sharp-ish emergency stop (due to lack of planning ahead, fool!) and it was a few miles later that I suddenly developed a terrible squealing noise, like a continuous version of the screeching you hear when racing car brakes aren't yet warmed up and are braking for a corner. Think James May's stripped out Aston on the cross-europe trip they did to find good driving roads, the one where he had no air conditioning in the middle of summer and the brakes constantly squealed until he was going up and down switch-back mountain passes - they're like that but constant
From what I can tell it is coming from the driver's front brakes. The missus couldn't tell if they were making noise on her side (grrrr...)
If I dab the brake pedal slightly and then release it again, they stop squealing momentarily but start up a couple of seconds later.
They also don't seem to be making noise when I'm actually braking properly, and the car is not pulling to one side when driving or braking.
The noise seems to go away sometimes when cornering round quite a sharp corner.
The drivers' side disc does feel pretty hot after even just a gently run.
So... any ideas???
My first thought is that a pad has lost some material and is now moving back and forth pretty freely in the caliper when it's not being clamped towards the disc, meaning the pad is resting on the disc and rubbing?
Or perhaps the front caliper(s) are seizing up slightly with the pistons stuck out of the caliper, pushing the pads up against the disc(s) lightly until they start squealing?
Or could it be something else??
I'm guessing that I won't really know until / unless I get everything off and stripped down, which I really am not keen on doing lol
Any suggestions very welcome!!
