Slightly depressing read on the 1.8 S-VT engine, as that is what is fitted in my car (from the factory). Although you had mentioned the rod issue when my car was in with you recently. A few follow-up questions. First, ballpark roughly how far can you push the standard rods without bending them ? Asking as I'm currently on around 180-190 bhp rwhp. Second, on the basis that I was already thinking of buying a seconhand S-VT engine to get the bottom end rebuilt as a forged buuild, is it really worth junking the head and instead buying and rebuilding/fitting the Mk 2 head and - if so anything worth doing on the latter head ? Or, bearing in mind I'm on FI, might I just as well stick with the S-VT head and iput up with the fact that (based on dynos of my car) it seems to cause a small drop in power at the very top of the rev range ?

Hey Skuzzle can you look at this post me really look for any tips I can get: www.mighty5s.com/thread/1003/mx5-mk2-5-vtMy engine sounds one of the worse one made, so any little more power tips out of the S-VT engine good. First I need to stop it sounding like a hair dryer

I've got the same engine as you in my silver car and it is a joy to drive, hard as you like. nothing wrong with the engine, it just doesn't have conrods made for "bigpower" like you'd get from forced induction.

The engine is still good, just the rods are the weakest link on the mk2.5 engine. If you do want to turbo/supercharge they can be replaced..

Hmm cool I did make other post in members rides, I'm very unsure what I need to take on first with the car. There rust (I can hear you all say on a MX5 never) There your tip stopping the hole in the roof, so new hood going to be a thing to replace. I guess easy stuff the intake and exhaust, but throttle body? I guess that a new injection thing and would a new intake take it? ECU know that sounds like more than I paid for the car lol

ECU know that sounds like more than I paid for the car lol Good ECUs are always a little expensive.... anyway, order I usually approach is this.. 1) fix the things needed to use it fully (non-leaky roof is a major plus, working brakes.. suspension that doesn't destroy your back) then.. 2) fix the things that make it more enjoyable (power mods? if that is your thing) 3) OR fix the things that make it nicer or make it last longer (arbitrary prarrie canoee - rustproofing? nicer gearknob etc) what those things are depends on what is wrong with the car and what you want out. the mk2.5 is the ultimate evolution of the chassis and great to drive as standard.

Mk1 1.8 engine is good. It's strong enough for 200 ftlb at the wheels. Vvt engine maybe 170lb not quite 100% sure yet but that seems OK at the moment so stick with 160 you'll be fine.
As for Vvt upgrades. First and foremost call us for an me221 ecu. We hold them in stock all the time now. £6000 worth of them in stock so we should never run dry. We've seen some crazy gains from moving the Vvt angle in the ecu. Think the last hit about 145 wheel horses so 170ish flywheel

I only wish this information was available before I bought my car... that 1800 VVT I have has scuppered my long term plans on a number of levels.
Maybe I'll just go for the remap and then think about a mk1 if I want more.

Or... Chuck in some rods, swap the head for a mk2, and live forever

Or... Chuck in some rods, swap the head for a mk2, and live forever It's not just that though, its also the known rust issues on the mk2 rails, and also that the mk2 cannot take a towbar but the mk1 can, these things sadly all add up..
and then fact I don't have pop up lights is getting to me more than I thought it would too...
