Fixed roof, who needs all that mechanical targa nonsense, fixed roof equals less weight, higher rigidity and better aero, a nice proper sports car that people will pay for, rather than a waste of space concepts they'll never build, and if they did about 4 people would buy.
I like the RF but for as much as it gives you an open top you could of just done a Coupe with usable rear space and offered a sun roof for those that want to see the sky.

I just don't see there's a big enough market for a fixed head MX5. I already see more ND's than I do GT86s and the Toybaru has a at least a 2 year head start in sales. I'm pretty sure if there was a market for Mazda to sell 1000s of coupe's they'd build one.

No, the GT86 is bigger, heavier, has 4 seats and doesn't have a very good engine, hence lacklustre sales, if you put out half hearted crap it won't sell, that said, I have considered buying one on so many occasions as it is almost there, the 5 suits better, in styling terms it'd make a great coupe as the RF shows.
Plenty of people want a good sports Coupe, you wouldn't see so many F-types, Caymans etc, if coupes didn't sell, loads of them about, see more of those than 5s, they just have to be good.

As I'm sure anyone who has driven a car sans-windscreen will agree, you have a choice between <50mph at all times (and still a bit painful), or wear a helmet. The former clearly isn't going to happen, the latter simply moves the bubble of insulation that you're trying to avoid by buying a convertible closer to your face.
Very pretty, but utterly pointless.

Agreed on every point but the engine. That's a cracker of an engine.

It not rubbish but its not enough for the car and why an ND will typically out perform it with only 155bhp.
