Been having dirty thoughts about V6 / V8s recently, anyone with any real world experience of how they handle when they are finished, or acurate weight differences between standard MX5 and a completed V6 or V8 car?
Possibilities I've seen ... KL V6 - seems to be a good option with 165bhp as standard and almost no weight difference due to the ally block
Ford 2.9 V6 - Ummm ... more weight and less power ..
Rover V8 - been done a few times, engine is relatively light and decent power can be found if you put some time in. Bit old though, maybe more of a cruising engine?
Lexus 4.0 V8 - getting to better power outputs here, 280bhp as standard? Block is ally again so very little weight penalty
LS1 - lots of these in the US but not sure any have made it over here?

I've had similar dirty thoughts. Would be a great time to change my car to manual too. With a classic car restoration in progress I don't have the time/money/space though mainly lack of skill!

Funny how things go around in circles ... still thinking about a V6 / V8 swap!!
Current favourite options are
Honda J32 or J35 V6 ... lighter than the 1.8 MX5 engine, 260bhp as standard and over 300 available easily ... fairly cheap kits to sort the sump, starter position and attach it to the MX5 box Downsides are the sump and starter aren't perfect (a bit low?), parts mostly come from the US and it's maybe pushing what an MX5 gearbox can handle?
LS V8 ... all the noise, all the power!!! Downsides apart from the cost (£15k plus?) It will add around 100kg, changes the balance slightly from 52/48 to 53 / 47. A lot of work as well, including some fabrication
LFX / LGX engine ... really intriguing, but I just can't find any in the UK ... I'm sure someone knew how to get them but can't remember who thar was 🤣

He will have a thread on it somewhere, and hopefully the pictures won't have been eaten!

Thanks, I followed the build as he did it, mainly because another friend already had a fully sorted 320bhp J swapped MX5, so I was interested to see if V6 approached it any differently. I think at that point I'd already bought the swap kit but I didn't have the right engine. I think there's 4 JV6 MX5s on the road in the UK at the moment, with another 3 being built that I know of
