Why? When I grew up one room was heated by a coal fire, no fitted carpets, just lino. You kids are too soft. When in Spain a single room was heated by a log burner, and it got a lot colder than UK at night, -8c was not unusual. I have a standby generator (from Spanish days) for topping up freezers and comms, bottled gas for cooking, candles, matches and water purification tablets if things get really bad. But they won’t…. Just wear more layers of clothing. Not exactly a kid (40 today of all days) but I lived in a flat for a number of years with no double glazing or heating at all, just a crappy old gas fire in the living room that often didn't work and you couldn't leave it on during the night. It was cold as wintery sh.it but you just wrapped up and looked forward to a hot shower in the morning. I suspect most of these kids that suffer from being nesh towards the cold are all Southerners, not many of us Northerners have figured out the internet yet. I have a few friends that turned their heating on during a "cold spell" a few weeks back (It dropped to what? 16c maybe?) instead of just putting a hoodie on Why? Just wear more layers of clothing. I hate being cold! I don't quite understand why I like driving with the roof down in all weathers lol I was thinking the other day that it would be potentially useful to be able to switch to bottled gas for the central heating, 'just in case'... If your cold, your not wearing enough clothes. Tshirts from March to October pretty much but I do have the odd jumper if it gets a bit nippy. Speaking of nippy, I think the coldest I've been was sunbathing in Riga whilst it was -23 C outside... I mean the outdoor spa was heated but I wanted to see how long I could last on one of the sunbeds before my nips started to want to fall off. Turns out, longer than I thought, fu.ck me that was cold . Just buy a sleeping bag that they use for everest and stop being a pussy about it lad. lol

Grew up on a farm with wood fires here, the stank. Wood flooring and 'thick' walls. One oil-filled electric heater to run in winter in one of the bedrooms lol not mine tho I got lucky, my bedroom was on the other side of the wall from the main fireplace. Once that fire was going for a week or two the residual heat came through the thick wall and my bed was basically warm all winter. I had no concept of central heating until I came to the UK in the 90s.

Ha ha me too, a couple of years in a static halfway up a mountain in West Wales in the 70s, my daughter was born in it. I was brought up in the fifties with a coal fire and ice on the inside of the windows. Everything stank of coal smoke. As the Norwegians say, there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.
