Knew it was to good to be true, a rust free 1990 MX5. The rusted area is around 100mm long by 30mm at its widest part. I know I need to take it back a little further on clean up the inner sill but what I can see it looks solid. Is this something that would need a welded plate or is a hole this size OK to be filled ? Also would like any recommendations on a rust treatment product. This is the only area of rust on the body that I wasn't aware of (Rust bubble on rear wing about 40mm in diameter) so cant moan to much really. Thanks

That needs to be welded I'm afraid. At least the inner looks ok.

That sucks ! Was hoping to get away with stuffing the hole with todays Newspaper and skimming it over with filler I know that its a hard question to answer but as a ball park figure what I'm I looking to spend for this kind of work to be done ?

With all welding it depends on how good a job you insist on. An outer sill patch wouldn't cost much, but will probably look naff. A proper sill job can be up to £7-800 a corner I believe.

Thank you Mr Minty. Not overly bothered on the appearance as this a keeper and not looking to sell on. Just want it done correctly. The thought of spending that kind of money on a car that I bought for £450 just doesn't make sense to me. The hope was to get on the road this summer, but if it doesn't happen I'm not overly bothered as this for me is a work in progress and will be always a on going learning project. The more I get involved in the car, the more I learn & as a consequence the more relaxed I get about not having it on the road. I doubt that makes sense to a lot of people, but to me it does. ☺

That's an hours work for someone with a grinder and a welder, then you just need to paint it. That's another year of motoring for not much

Yeah, do it cheap then - as long as it gets through its MOT that's all that really matters.
