Considering getting some of these for my mk1. I currently have a pair of cobra monaco fixed back buckets seats and whilst I like the way they look in the car, I’ve recently had some back problems and can’t get comfortable in them anymore. I’ve tried additional padding and changing the tilt of the seat on the mounts over the last couple of weeks but still not great. So thinking of going back to OEM which is not ideal as I’d have to source new seatbelts also as I have harnesses now. Anyway researching around it seems the 2.5 highback seats are the best of the standard fit seats so before I get on the hunt, any thoughts?

My only suggestion is to try and get material, not leather, if there are any. I enjoyed the feel of the mk2.5 seats - Mazda usually do great ones. I honestly really like the OEM mk1 ones though, in their material. If you're big.. foamectomy ?

Thanks Atlex I’m looking for fabric ones if I can find some. Mk1 seats are potential but prefer the look of the mk2s

Entirely personally speaking, my main issue is that I'm too tall in the torso for the standard seats, so if anyone rear-ends me (oo-er missus) my neck is basically going to snap because the 'headrest' only comess up to the base of my skull at best I have a spine made of porcelain most days and the only seat I found that has any form of lower back support (in a shape that actually reflects the shape of the human spine) was the Racetech RT1000, except they look like they need trimming on the shoulder wings and maybe even near the base to get them to fit...

I've got a totally knackered back, and I've got leather highbacks's in my 2.5 and they are super comfy, and my back is a lot better than it was when I was driving my NA.
In this weather they fully suck and get super hot and sticky though.

This is my concern with the mk1 & mk2 seats with separate headrests. The mk1 tombstones are not too bad for me but the headrest is just a little too low I think. Why do all buckets seem like they’re made by chiropractors looking for new business!!

Any chance you could measure from the floor to the top of the headrest. I’m curious to know where they’d be relative to my roll bar? Have you cut the foam out on yours to sit lower? I’m thinking this is on the cards for me.

They seem to be just a flat bit of plastic for the back of the seat - my back, anyone's back, is not a straight line!!
(And if it is, you should see someone about that!)

This is the trouble I’m having with mine. Trying to create the right form out of foam is the problem. 2 issues I’m finding: What feels good when sat in the car in the garage doesn’t feel right when driving. What feels good in the short term isn’t necessarily good for my back on extended drives. Tempted to get some of that expanding foam and spray it in a bin bag or sack when I’m sat in it - race car style!!

I know exactly what you mean about short-term vs long-term comfort - I think the foam may be a good option!
I would say try the Racetech seats if you can get to a retailer or the distributor - they are literally the only seats I've found that had any lower back support, and they were still comfy after half an hour of test sitting!

So I’ve hadthe mk2.5 highbacks In cloth with standard seatbelts for a while and time for an update.
Plus points Substantially more comfortable for long & short drives, like getting into a bed after sleeping on the floor for years! Easier to get in and out of the car, particularly with the roof up. I’m sitting slightly lower in the car even without a trimming the foam in the base The retractable seatbelts allow me to reach the glovebox whilst driving (really, a genuine surprise to me!) No more faffing with the 4 point harnesses or explaining to people how to use them I can now check the blind spot without slackening the harnesses to the point of ridiculousness.
Not so plus points Definitely feeling less connected and frankly a little unsafe (it’s a bit like not wearing a seatbelt in a normal car - doesn’t feel right!) The loss of the harnesses has been a major downside. I now have to brace for cornering. Even though I’m sitting lower in the car I now feel like I’m sat on rather than in it. The seats themselves are so bouncy, the foam seems to act like a trampoline, emphasising every bump in the road. Also maybe I’m a bit wide in the back but the side bolsters feel like I’ve got a cushion in each armpit!
All round much better for my back and usability of the car day to day. . But (and it’s big is one) the connection to the car from using harnesses is so awesome I’m tempted to go back.
