What's so special about a stainless tubular manifold? Is there anything special about them? What's the difference between a tubular manifold and just a normal stainless manifold?

i imagine tubular just implies its drawn steel. instead of rolled and welded meaning it'll be smoother inside and less likely to crack after cycles but i though almost all exhausts would be drawn not rolled.

It's from moss, I'very bought it just because it was a bargain price! One left on ebay I believe for £85 delivered.

It'll make a nice noise. That's the important thing.

I'm now starting to worry it won't fit lol how does it work with the length of the cat? I'm pretty sure I have the longest cat so if it's too long is it just a simple case if buying one of the shorter ones to go with it?

THat's always a ball ache. Just measure your cat and cross your fingers.

I'm pretty certain I have the longest one which means nothing fits with it lol I've been reading and people are saying they've cut pipes and re-welded to get things to fit. Am I missing something or would it not be easier to buy the cat back, measure the gap between downpipe and mid pipe and buy the cat that fits? Actually those people might have not had an aftermarket manifold.

Right, so I didn't realise there was no flange on the downpipe. I think this is a good thing as now I can make it fit with a different size cat.
Annoyingly though I think it means I'm going to have to get a garage to fit it and weld the flange on for me because I don't know how else I'll get the measurements right. Just checking as well, replacing the cat with a shorter one shouldn't be a problem should it? There's no hangers on the cat is there?

All of the 3 cats fitted to mk1s have different flange angles ie. The 440 is not just a lengthened 370. The way to make it work with off the shelf components is to buy the cat that suits the manifold as the mani to cat flange will be the correct angle/position etc then the cat outlet flange will line up with an off the shelf cat back system. So 370 and 440 cat back systems are identical but differ in the downpipe+cat. The 475mm later cars have unique downpipe, cat and system and no parts are compatible with anything else. HTH

Ok thanks.
So if I get the 440mm cat and the catback to go with it then I can just get the correct flange welded on to the downpipe to go with the cat? Currently the downpipe off the new manifold has no flange so has to have one fitted anyway.
Then if I need to go back to stock I just get and exhaust and manifold for the 440mm cat?

Manifold arrived today, it looks very short but I'm comparing it to the 1.6. Need to have a good look under my 1.8 ('97) but could anyone tell me if I'm now missing a downpipe? Kind of hope I am because then I can just get a downpipe for the 440mm cat and go from there! Sorry for the rubbish pics.

Looks nice!
I'm guessing the equal lengths will reduce turbulence in the exhaust and potentially release a couple of ponies?

I hope so lol Just need to figure out how I'm going to fit it now!
