Hi guys,
I need to give my money pit a service at the weekend (oil, oil filter, air filter etc etc).
I hear & see so many different opinions regarding engine oil. Some suggest expensive dog's whatsits full synthetic, others opt for cheap supermarket oil. Some suggest one grade and others suggest something completely different.
So details are : 1. Mk1 Eunos - 1990.
2. It has no engine mods (basic 1.6).
3. Use it as my daily, every day of the year. 4. Don't track day it.
Any advice to a complete non-mechanical minded Eunos driver would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Always try to use a good quality oil. I use Shell 5W30 fully synthetic & a decent filter.
Euro Car Parts have 60% off on their site- use MID60. Put your reg in & you can’t go far wrong.

I'd probably suggest a decent 10w40 semi or fully synthetic, 5w30 is a little on the thin side, but would be OK...

atlex linked to a great site in his Random Interesting thread: mighty5s.com/post/28595/thread(with some other chatter a few posts on from that) I've got some of the Total Quartz 7000 10w40 to go in when I (finally) put the engine back together, which I'm hoping will be super-smoooooth, going from the low wear ratings in that test I think any oil nowadays will be good enough, though - oil tech has moved on since the 5s were made, so even supermarket stuff will be designed to meet the minimum current standards and therefore be suitable, I reckon. Change it regularly and I don't think it matters because it won't be in there long enough to degrade!

5w if you're in a place that snows, 10w if not ? final number, up to your usage pattern I'd not go less than 30 or over 40... for no trackdays and daily use I think 30 could be the optimum ? This shows what temperature ranges to think about:

Cheers guys, Went onto Eurocar parts, as Howard mentioned got a nice discount. However, don't know now if I've order the right stuff I ordered 5 litres of Shell Helix HX7 Professional AF 5w30 (just noticed it's a semi-synthetic not fully synthetic), is that good or bad ? To be honest if it's the wrong stuff I'll just order something else, would rather get it right. As far as changing the oil regularly.....hmmmm, sort of failed on that one a bit. Don't think it's been changed for nearly 3 years...oops. I did say above that I've not a mechanically minded Eunos driver.

Just make it a yearly thing - ideally in summer during nicer weather.. Once you've done it a few times it's really not much work. It is more effort disposing of old oil than actually doing the change. That oil should be fine, BTW, it's just specced to meet some standards much later than your MX5's engine, but it'll still do the trick. The truism goes... any oil will do if you don't have any in your engine. Learn to check your oil when it is cold, before starting the car, it takes less than 30 seconds. Don't even need to put the bonnet stay up, since our bonnets are aluminium.

Been on eurocaroarts 10w40 since the engine swap, hasn't exploded yet. Used to get fancy magnatec but I think it was just placebo

Cheers Atlex. To be honest, I do check the oil quite regular, always when the engine is cold, and top it up as & when needed. Learnt that mistake in the late 80's when I blew up the engine in my old Mk1 Ford Escort because I'd ran it bone dry.
I just find the whole oil thing a bit of a minefield sometimes. As you know you can pick up a 5 litre bottle of oil for £20 & a bottle for £80 (and everything in between). I'm a great believer in buy cheap buy twice, but didn't want to spend a fortune on oil if cheaper does the job.

Our engines are agricultural beasts designed in the 80s - pretty much anything you could buy today would be higher spec than the oil they were designed for, so as long as you get something approaching the right viscosity grades it'll be fine.
