The 5 will soon be off the road and in my garage for winter maintenance so this is my winter wheels Ā£500 and everything works, K series, head gasket been done, mot. converted to 2wd but have the prop to get it back to 4 (though it's more like Quattro than true 4wd) i have to say I quite like it!!

as someone with prior working knowlege of the 'K' series & their headgaskets, I'd say don't be suprised if it fails again some are bomb-proof but others are fragile, a cambelt kit & headgasket set usually fix things (don't need headbolts if none are stretched / longer) 1.8 have wet liners & can leak coolant into the sump, another issue is liner hights against the headgasket & cylinderhead " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png"> keep an eye on the coolant & lift the reservoir to fill / bleed if the prop has been removed, did the VC fail or was it for 'economy' reasons (dont realy make mych diference?) otherwise they're well supported and some good forums - I like www.landyzone.co.uk/forum/although I'm sorta biassed as have a pair of 200tdi 3door Discovery's and my mrs has just bought an early LR Ninety thats been off the road for 5 years due to cambelt failure - collected sunday & running tuesday Rich.

A mate had one of these and he drove it like a twat, using its size to try and bully his way through traffic, so I am biased against them... lol
(He was a chap who'd do 60mph on an empty dual carriageway at night because he didn't want to get caught for speeding, but then do 50mph down a narrow side street with cars parked each side and only one running lane down the middle because he wouldn't get zapped, so he was not exactly the best driver anyway... lol)

Zed. I'm hoping that as this is a post 01 car and seems well looked after that I have a good K series! Ta for the advice, I'll keep an eye. The guy I bought it off was a nice knowledgeable LR nut. He had 2 v8 defenders and another freelander. He said that it was the centre prop bearings that were noisy, plus it was being used for motorway miles!? the IRD and rear diff seem quiet so I have got another good guaranteed working prop from a LR breaker, once I get it up on my mates ramp and bolted in we shall see! wannabe - that'd be me!!!šš
