Anyone got a scrap Mk.2 loom I could get a couple of plugs with cable tails from? Or suggest where I might get 'em?
What I'm looking for is the plug that connects to the crank sensor and the plug that connects to the cam sensor on the front of the intake cam - the Mk.2 version not the VVT version whatever that is.
In fact, in a perfect world, if anyone knows what the plug on the Mk.1 CAS is called (the connector on the CAS itself, not the cable socket) I'd love to find and order one of those.
See, what I want to do is refit my old Megasquirt DIYPNP to my current car, but convert the ignition trigger from the Mk.1 CAS to Mk.2-style sensors but with a BOFI 32-2 crank trigger wheel instead of the stock 4 tooth thing. So in a perfect world, instead of chopping off the CAS plug and extending the wires to the new sensors, I'd make a Y-lead that plugs into the existing CAS connector and extends to the plugs for the two Mk.2 sensors. That way I could revert to the stock ECU if required and also change the cam and crank sensors without splicing and soldering the wires.
But that would mean identifying the connector type on the CAS and I have no clue what it's called or who might make it. Any idea?

Okay, I've done a bit more digging and it looks like a CAS socket to make a plug & play loom is a non-starter, since according to this thread on miataturbo www.miataturbo.net/electronics-122/connector-witch-hunt-70034/ the CAS plug is a wire-to-device type, meaning it's only intended to plug into components, and so no matching cable-mount socket exists. Bum. I suppose I could still chop the CAS cable off leaving a decent pigtail and put a generic automotive 4-pin plug and socket in there. Then I could make a plug & play loom from the new socket to the '99 sensors and have the original CAS on a short plug & play adapter too.

Oh, no, wait! Wait a minute. Yes, it looks like these guys have come up with a connector which mates with the CAS loom (and with the coilpack looms too, as they use the same plugs) www.bmotorsports.com/shop/product_info.php/products_id/4161Things are looking up again. Also, yes, I know talking to yourself is the first sign of madness, but these are strange times, strange times indeed.

Or, splice into the loom before the CAS and extend it to the new sensor, then you can swap between the two sensors as you wish,

Great find, I will definitely look at nicking this or do Dadbif's suggestion if I ever get round to buying a BP4W rocker cover and use the MK2 sensors

That's the CAS plug (and coilpack plug) but it's the version that's on the car and not the mating socket you'd need to extend the cable. The resource I should have looked at all along is a sticky on miataturbo: www.miataturbo.net/electronics-122/miata-oem-aftermarket-connector-guide-99970/That mentions the aftermarket CAS socket, the cam sensor plug and the crank sensor plug. I may just order all three from those guys in the US.

Have you tried RS components? they stock every socket/plug combination known to man. I got my MS ECU plugs for my link loom from them.

Yeah, I looked at RS and Farnell too. RS have 84 different 4-pins-in-1-row automotive plugs and none of them is the MX-5 CAS plug.

I think I still have some Mk2 engine loom sections...I’ll have a look for you.

Had a quick look in the shed,I’ve got a box of MK2 loom cuts. I’ll dig it out when I’m off shift on Tuesday to see if I have what you’re looking for.

Well here's a thing. Some wonderful person just added to that miataturbo thread and mentioned a UK-based connector supplier called Autoclick UK www.auto-click.co.uk/index.php?route=common/homeIt looks as if they sell a plug which mates with the '94 CAS connector and the plugs for the '99 cam and crank sensors. I've ordered a couple of each and I'll let you know what arrives in due course.

Holy cow, it's real. Connectors arrived (along with some correctly coloured wire, might as well do it right) and the thing I hoped would be a matching socket for the CAS plug really is. The shell mates with a lovely positive click. So now I can make up a Y-cord to extend the CAS wires to the two '99 sensors instead. (Just as soon as I can find a valid reason to go in to work and pick up my crimp tools, sleeving etc.)
