Hi,
this is my first car mod project of any kind and I’ve gone for gold and subsequently now hit some problems due to lack of experience and poor assumptions. Hoping that I can get some direction from you guys?!
I’ve fitted a 2003 mk2.5 1.8 VVT motor into a 1997 mk1 1.6, the 88hp one. The chassis is in pretty good condition having had undersealing and a robust rear sill repair previously.
My blockers are these;
1. the old exhaust was completely rotten, no parts could be kept. I’m pretty sure I’m right that a 1.6 pipe would strangle a 1.8. I’m on the hunt for the right exhaust parts and there seems to be very little used around. I restored the VVT manifold and refitted it, anticipating that I’d find all the exhaust parts I’d need and seems to have been a poor assumption. Reading the different guides online more closely, no-one has suggested that the VVT manifold can be used.
On the basis that I have no exhaust parts from the manifold backward, can I keep the VVT manifold, and if so what are my options? If I must use the 1.8 manifold from a MK1, there’s still the problem of sourcing the CAT. What’s a good aftermarket setup? In desperation I’ve considered having a section fabricated locally with a Magnaflow 200 cell sports CAT welded in. I’m suddenly very out of my depth.
2. I’m struggling with the loom. I have kept the mk1 loom and splashed out on a ME-221 8995 ECU which allows me to use the 2 plug loom. Until I hit the exhaust issue my plan was that this would be the only new part I would use apart from brake discs.... So what is the process for mating the old loom to the newer motor; few if any of the existing connectors seem to mate (and they obviously don’t reach!). As far as I can tell, I need to make up loom extensions from the old to the new connectors. Are male/female connectors available somewhere or is it a case of cutting off the old and splicing in pigtails that have been cut from a donor loom?
Any help will certainly speed things along for me.
Much appreciated.
Matt
