Thought it was about time I started a thread on my car, if only to help me keep track of what I've done with it!
It's a 1991 JDM Eunos 1.6, basically standard except for a roll bar, brakes from an NB, cone induction kit and Wolfrace 15" wheels that have seen better days. Newbie thread is here.
Since I bought it in December 2019, I've done a few motorsport things: Sevenoaks DMC Autosolo (Brands Hatch paddock and tarmac rally stage) Sevenoaks DMC scatter rally Sevenoaks DMC grass autotest

Only things I have done to it up to now is raise the ride height, so now it doesn't scrape on EVERY speed bump, just the really high ones.
Also smashed off the aftermarket fog light from the rear bumper at some point on the scatter rally. Will probably replace with an LED combined reversing/fog light job.
Bought some 14" Enkei wheels off Gumtree (ET45 14 x 6JJ according to the seller), only to find that the front wheels don't clear my brake calipers, so will probably need to get some spacers (or just get rid of the wheels and find another set).

if you're on NB brakes, especially big sport ones, you be needing 15"
enjoy the cheaper tyres tho ?

Picked up another set of 15s locally, BK racing alloys with Michelin Pilot Sport 3s. They've got some funny kind of wheel bolts on that I have to work out, but hopefully they'll fit over my brakes!

Finished changing the cam belt, accessory belts, water pump, hoses and plugs/wires last night, well chuffed. About £150 for the parts, of which £80 was the hoses that were more cosmetic than essential. Still needs a good clean up and next I want to check the timing to see if it has had the 14 degree mod or not. Also need to see if I can get any more suspension travel/ride height out of the coilovers; even though all motorsport is off for a month, I want it to scrape/bang less on the roads when we next get out in the lanes for a rally.

Just copying my posts over from the 'what did you do to your 5 today' thread to keep them together here, more for my own records than anything else! Cam belt job done at basically 160,000 on the clock so I'll know when to do it next. #1I finished the last couple of bits of my belt and hose change job last night. I thought it was finished last week, but was having a lot of leakage of coolant from somewhere around the water pump/thermostat, so I took the aux belts and front covers off, tightened everything up a bit and put it all back together. Then I tightened one of the water pump pulley bolts too much and the head sheared off So last night I took the alternator belt off again, took the pulley off, wangled the remains of the bolt out of the water pump and put it back together again with a replacement bolt. What an rear canoe (me and the job!). Took the car out for a little spin and it's running nicely, but seems to have a bit of hesitation/sluggishness just at start of the throttle pedal travel. I hadn't driven the car for a month but I don't think it's just my memory of how it responded before. Any suggestions on how to liven up the throttle response at low opening? Don't think I changed/knocked anything while doing the other job but it's quite possible! #2Well last night I thought I'd give the 14 degree mod a try, so I took the car out for a run round the block to warm up, and it was still sluggish. Bridged the diagnostics thing and plugged in the timing light, and couldn't find the timing mark anywhere! Trying to think what I could have cocked up, the crank pulley can only go on in one place, and the timing belt was on OK. It took a while to find a good angle to point the timing light and to look through another gap under the crossover tube, but when I eventually found the timing mark, it was way beyond the 0/TDC line on the little marker gauge thing! It was retarded, and so am I. Anyway, I marked a line on the cam angle sensor, freed it up to rotate, and gave it a twist, setting it to 12-14 degrees (hard to be very precise), and tightened it up again. Went out for another run round the block and my little beauty was back on form I don't quite know how the timing could have gone so wrong from doing the cam belt job, as I didn't touch the CAS doing it and it was well tight enough not to move on its own. Anyway, happy to have things running nicely again.

I've been thinking about why my front brakes lock up so easily. My car has NB/1.8 brakes on the front (I think the rears are standard 1.6 Eunos), and no ABS.
It happens on both my sets of wheels (with Toyo Proxes T1Rs and Michelin Pilot Sport 3s, both of which were made in 2017 according to the codes on the sidewalls), so I don't think it's tyre-related. It seems to be more from the front left but that could just be extra weight on that corner due to road camber. It happens on track and also on normal roads, and at this time of year I would like to be more confident that they won't lock up when bombing round the lanes on navigational rallies, as I don't want to end up in a hedge.
When I had a look at the front brakes last night the discs and pads are in good shape and have plenty of life left in them. I'll be inspecting the rear brakes tomorrow. I have been thinking about adding a bias/proportioning valve but also have read that some people remove the pressure reducer for the rear lines with the same purpose. Other people change the rear setup with more aggressive pads/discs to increase rear braking effectiveness.
Has anyone else had/resolved this issue? What else should I be thinking about and checking out?

I have been thinking about adding a bias/proportioning valve but also have read that some people remove the pressure reducer for the rear lines with the same purpose. the standard f/r bias is very front biased going up on the front brake efficiency will not help matters is the rear disc / caliper any different on the 1.8 mk1's? if not then maybe worth gutting / removing the compensator to test? I'm not a fan of the generic 'bias valves', seen too many issues with them Rich.

Thanks Rich, will have a look at what's on the rear and see if it has been upgraded...then maybe think about upgrading if it hasn't been. Where is the compensator thingy?

Where is the compensator thingy? silver / aluminium thinggy with brakepipes sprouting from it (bolted to servo / master cylinder) I've removed that lot (literally!) on my car but thats another story beware if you remove or gut it as you might have been locking the front wheels safely but with the weight transfer the rear can also lock causing 'fun' when you least desire 'fun' Rich.
