My MX5 Mk1 just passed it's MOT today... yay! It needed a new exhaust to do so which I'd sourced in advance.... rear tail pipe and dustbin size muffler all fitted and doing it's job. My mechanic held off installing the new CAT until we can answer a question... simple enough, but no-one locally seems to know. On the rear end of my old CAT is a small pipe extension, quite badly corroded which is why it hasn't been interfered with ...yet... The new CAT doesn't have this and nobody locally has come across this before. The closest similar arrangement I've found was on you-tube... a short clip... but on this the pipe was attached/sprouting from the exhaust pipe just downstream of the CAT. The pipe clearly goes somewhere and performs some function.... but where and what? Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated. Hope the pic helps.

Pretty sure it's a thermocouple. Probably used to indicate if you're oxidizing fuel over the cat. If you've ever seen "HEAT" displayed on the dash that'll almost certainly be what is happening.

Yep, it's the cat heat sensor. Serves no purpose so don't worry about it

Hope the pic helps. you have a Eunos Roadster. jdm cars have a cat overheat sensor (what you've found) that melts when the cat / exhaust gasses reach a certain temp look in the dash cluster theres a 'heat' warning lamp that's probably not illuminated in ~20 years you can unplug it from the cat & ignore it, did this on my '91 Eunos & re-purposed the warning lamp for the rear foglight 'telltale' (for mot purposes) Rich.
