Hi all,
I'm gearing up to replace all the belts and water pump on my NA (as I don't know when/whether the PO did it and the aux/alternator belts are looking a bit ropey), and I came across some references to the 14 degree timing mod. I've read some of them and would like to check whether it's already been done on my car, and do it if it hasn't, but I was surprised that there isn't a thread on here with a how-to or whatever.
So, anyone who's done it, what info did you use? Any good links for me to read/watch?

Yeah, I know, I had looked things up, was just wondering what people here used. As a kind of meta-guide.

I used the Car Passion Channel on youtube, for changing waterpump etc. he also covers 14 degree mod in one of his videos. I'd never done anything as drastic as this before and managed fine following them.

I'd say it's best done on a Dyno but it's fairly straightforward with a timing light and a spanner. I think these engines run good with a bit more advance.

Hi Folks,
1840cc engine in avatar car.
I know this is not the normal way of adjusting the timing but I topped up with Tescos finest drove home then did the jumper wire trick and then went old school and advanced the timing till I got the fastest tickover then advanced it a fraction more. locked it off then went for another drive. loading the engine up by driving in a higher gear than normal to listen for knock. I bought a timing light about a year later and checked it properly to find I had set it to 15.5 degrees advanced so I left it well alone. My Old car has not seen a timing light in 28 years or more !!!!
