Hi all,
When I was getting scrutineered for the recent hillclimb at Wiscombe, the chap said that I need to sort out the tunnels between the boot and cabin - at present they are open enough to allow any explosive gases that might emanate from the boot to enter the passenger compartment. Apparently this was mostly a problem with NA cars, Mazda had sorted it out with later ones.
In the Blue Book (J5.2.2) it says the car should "have a protective bulkhead of non-flammable material between the engine and the driver/passenger compartment capable of preventing the passage of fluid or flame. Gaps must be sealed with suitable flame proof material that completely closes any gap at all times."
I know the engine's not in the boot, but the petrol tank and filler pipe are, so the scrute still thought I should sort it out. He suggested if I can't get it sealed with some welded metal, I could use a flame-resistant space filling foam.
Has anyone had this fixed on their car? How did you do it?

MSA * / rally legal bulkhead sealing can be done with adhesive aluminium tape I've used (& seen - wrc cars & clubmen) the above many times covering seams & screw-holes, you could pop-revit a panel in the voids & fiberglass to seal? to the letter of the blue-book its a fluid or flame resistant barrier just remember, the fuel tank is under the car (in the 'bulge' behind the seats) and accessable through a plate / hole on the top, also the filler-pipes in the boot area as visable by scrutineers so whatever you do is best looked at from front & back? if you have a rollcage fitted then you've already broken-through the bulkhead so that would need sealing? I do have a cage fitted yep, that's partly what makes it awkward. It's not urgent as there won't be any other speed events for me before at least next Feb, but should probably get something sorted by then. Will investigate tape and foam options...

I filled mine with Foam, made a complete mess of it but it's good enough. I have seen many ways of doing it and most alot neater than mine, cut aluminium sheets with a sealant or taped in place is one option as well. I was told that as long as the scrutineer can't see light coming through then it is sufficient.

Keep the stock interior carpet on the parcel shelf

Filling with foam is the quickest and dirtiest way.
I have just covered some carboard cutouts in ally tape and gaffered them in place.
when I change the soft-top later this year I will do it again

Made some cardboard templates to block the voids just the far side of where the struts are & the same on the cab side near the base plates for the roll bar. Loosely wrapped the wires that go through in silver tape, stuck the CAD To some self adhesive firewall stuff that I saw in Trident at Silverstone, stuck them on then filled the void between with builder’s fire foam. Used the spare silver tape to wrap the fuel filler & breather pipes as a scruteneer didn’t like them being rubber.... This stuff is similar to what I used www.mishimoto.co.uk/embossed-aluminium-heat-shield.html

I have not come across that as the cars a "roadgoing" so I don't think there are specific regs about the material though probably not worth arguing with on the day it does seem a bit harsh. The fuel filler pipe is a factory fitted item. The scrutineers I have seen check it normally just look in the boot to see if they can see daylight. I had to make panels out of gaffer tape at a sprint at Castle Combe in 2019 because they could. Keeping the parcel shelf carpet helps reduce the visible light.

I’m always in a roadgoing class too, but had some silver tape in my bag so to pacify the guy wrapped the fuel pipes. I could’ve had a discussion with him about it, but thought it better to just do it.
