NB headlamp upgrade?

Hello all.
So I've bashed about on the search do da, to no avail.

What is the latest up to date thinking on improving the NB headlight situation?
My NB is a 1999 one.
I am looking for a simple plug in upgrade, at the moment the lamps are standard and rather dismal.
Anyone here done something great to their NB lights to get a better light for driving behind?

I can attest to osram nightbreakers and philips racingvision being good choices for a bulb upgrade. (I'm literally running both, racing vision in the carib and nightbreakers in the white car)

Being NB1 it'll just be H4 type bulbs.

From what I understand cleaning and relacquering the headlights glass doesn't bump up the output much, it's a visual improvement but not an output improvement.

I have always used PIAA Xtreme White Plus and been very happy with them, but they are not cheap... lol
