After a lot of thinking I’ve decided not to carve up my NC to make a roofless/windowless Speedster. I was flippin close to doing it ….
Is there anyone here that does or knows of a person that is good with fibreglass work?
My current thinking, yes, I know Zed, talk about me flip-flopping here. After considering many cars and kits that are on the market I am here …..
My current thinking is to carve up a MK1 Audi TT 225 soft-top model. There are quite a few reasons for this that possibly only make any sense to me. Some of them I will list. It’s to be show more than go, but still be quick. So lowered, aluminium finish ‘wrap’, fatter, maybe bigger diameter, Dunlop style steel wheels and other do-dabs. A mild turbo upgrade, very easy, very cheap. It’s a good base car. I’ve had two brand new ones when they came out, the 225 and then the glorious V6.
They are now cheap as chips. All the modernness that I require is there. The interior detailing is splendid.
I would need to get the “humps” that you see behind the occupants heads on period Speedsters created. Along with a ridged tonneau cover for the passenger side.
This is not my first ‘Tango’ with creating Speedsters. So I know a good deal of what I’m trying to do here.
Well there it is. My NC is just too perfect to slice up, I love it!
Regards. Rich.

Ahh ha! This is what I’m trying to do to a TT MK1. Don’t know why but I can get the image uploader to work. Rich.

You're crazy. I like it lol Depending on your budget... you could consider getting the car 3D scanned and then having someone CAD something up?

Hi there wannabe. The ‘deck cover’ in the above pictures was once made by an American company but sadly they no longer make it. However it is very like a Renault one which I can get and then work from that. It’s always easier to do that than start from scratch. I already know where to get the screen and side screens done.
I’m possibly looking for the Unobtainium ‘wrap’ here. Not chrome, but a shiny aluminium finish, or paint that looks like polished aluminium. I’ve seen the paint on huge RC aircraft that people make. But it’s crazy expensive.
I just want to make something that is great fun to own and drive for a few weeks each year. The kit cars that I like would all finish in the mid to high £20Ks …. Hmmm, no thanks. On top of that the work. I don’t think I have it in me anymore.
I’m even looking at the V6 MK1 TT now as they are also a super car for about £5K. Not in any rush but something will come up I’m sure.
Regards. Rich.

This sort of wrap? www.vwvortex.com/threads/polished-aluminum-f150.8538250/Or is that too chrome? lol Searching for 'brushed aluminium wrap' seems to bring up lots of pictures/options! Wrapping a car well seems to be four-figures, though, so budget is needed! Was the Renault rear deck from the Wind? I recall them being reported as good to drive, but the name is perhaps a bit unfortunate haha

I've got some aluminium paint in the workshop somewhere (Industrial sorta stuff not diy)....... will dig it it out sometime (As I'm going to use it on my silver car!) Rich.

Hi wannabe. That is the exact finish that I’m going for.
I’m not sure if the chrome wrap is much shinier than that, maybe it isn’t? I polished the bonnet on my MX-5 NB and I loved it. Also waaay back in about 1973 ….. good grief, when? I had an Austin Healey 100/4 which I made into an ‘M’ spec one and I took months, on and off, polishing the whole aluminium body on that. It looked epic.
Zed. That is interesting. Perhaps that is like the RC modellers use? If so that can be polished. Please let me know as and when, thanks. I’ve seen a massive Dakota RC plane that was done in it and it looked just like polished aluminium.
I expect the figures to run something like.
Car purchase for a MK1 V6 TT with DGS gearbox …… £5K max. Wrap about £2K Screens about £750 Lowering onto good units £1200
The other stuff just a lot of work that I can do.
So an initial outlay of say about £10K. That’s ok. Of course as with all things, it would in time be more. I would not be building it to make money, but to enjoy. Having said that these type of things done well do command good money if sold.
Looking at what has sold on the internet here in the UK I am amazed at some of the prices. But a lovely ‘toy’ in the garage for that sort of money would be great. Along with all the benefits of using the Audi as the base vehicle.
Regards. Rich.
Ps. Zed, I still hankering for the D-Type replica.

D-type replica! Unnnnnngh They are so nice. I'd like the (I'm going to get this wrong...) XJ13? The super-low, one-off (IIRC?) thing with a V12? That I think sits in the Gaydon Motor Museum?? You've given me the realisation that I could just strip my patchy bonnet paint (literally missing bits due to what was apparently nuclear bird poo lol) and leave it unfinished! Would still go well with the rest of the rat-look car... lol

Ooh, do you have info on that? As per post a moment ago, my paint is appallingly bad, so at some point I'm going to have to get the rust cut out and (if anything is left lol) patch it up and give it a once-over with something that is durable and that I don't have to polish (because it's a massive ball-ache lol)
