Hi all.
After a year of trouble free driving out little MX5 has finally developed a running fault. Yesterday we popped round the corner to the shops. On returning to the car it turned over fine but refused to fire up. As it's stuck in the shop carpark I have only done some basic tests so far and it seems there is no spark at the plugs.
I've used a multimeter to check all the fuses are ok. The fuel pump can be heard priming when the ignition is switched on.
The check engine light comes on as it should when the ignition is switched on. There are no fault codes stored in the ECU (seems odd?) There is 12v to the front coil pack...didn't check the rear as I'm sure if even one coil pack was working the car would at least attempt to fire. Hooking #1 HT lead to a new plug earthed to the cam cover shows there is no spark while cranking. There are no telltale lights on the dash or blinking leds indicating anything is wrong.
If either the crank angle sensor or immobiliser had failed wouldn't that throw a fault code in the ecu? The rear drive belt failed a few months ago and bits of it where wrapped around the crank pulley so I'm hoping it's only a crank angle sensor issue but I know with the luck I've been having lately it will be a dead immobiliser lol.
Any suggestions??? I should be towing the car home at the weekend so I'm hoping somebody here can suggest a method to figure out the cause of the problem without using trial and error replacing parts in the hope I get lucky before my money runs out lol.

crank angle sensor is the favourite that and earth connections.. and moisture in the ecu..... Rich.

Would a failed crank angle sensor cause a fault code....same question for the immobiliser?
