Working on the white car today, I took a good look at the the expansion tank to see what state it was in.
In my case mine was heavy with brown/rust coloured prarrie canoee.
It wasn't oily, at least as far as I could tell, but it was Mud-like.
Took several minutes with a high-pressure hose to clean it out.
The high-pressure hose made it come out like chocolate milk, which gives search results indicating a headgasket leak ? Oil to water.
There was only a tiny bit of the rusty mud-coloured prarrie canoee at the top of the radiator.
Oil pressure is good. Oil level is good. Oil looks good. I can't see any mess beneath the oil filler cap.
Along with a full fluids flush (oil, coolant, etc) soon I'm going to get it compression tested.
Anything else I should check for ?
Suggestions welcome.

Wen I checked my new to me 1.8 MK1 it's exactly the same. I suspect it's been run on straight water and not coolant. It doesn't over heat and there seems to be no excessive water pressure. Although once recently after a particularly spirited drive ti was chucking a bit of water back into the expansion bottle, I could hear it. Never seen my other MK1 do that.

This car is "new to me" too. Got it in november and pretty much garaged until the last few weeks since it dried out. The chassis is one of the best I've ever seen.
Hoping a coolant flush solves this.

My old plugger (Peugeot 407 HDI) had the same problem last month. I've had it 7 years and noticed the coolant in the tank had gone brown. No contamination to the oil though.. and no loss in water level. One theory given to me was that the coolant's rust inhibitor had gone off with old age. Flushed the car out about 4 times... changed to new coolant.. problem gone!

Every mx I've had has been the same. Flush all that prarrie canoe out and put fresh in. If it's been sat like that for a while though heaven knows what state the waterpump will be in. Suggest changing it for peace of mind.

right, my rad is properly brown (it looked so normal.. but it is very brown 'how do you look so normal, mona ?" -- recent underworld track). so I've ordered an ally one to replace it. but today I also pulled out my spark leads white faffing with a few other things. they tell a story I think ? .. needless to say I gave them a good going-over with car cleaner and let them dry off before putting them back in. leftmost is frontmost - the previous owners were a little over-eager when it came to the oil filler cap also some of the upper seals at the tops of each leads warped and that yellow stuff ? I don't know what it is but I have find it on many components, including the fuel lines. I just hope it isn't related to the crud that was in the expansion tank. I've ordered a set of jackson racing ones to replace these.

also ordered a new thermostat because currently this car is taking much longer than it should to warm up, indicating the thermostat might be stuck open.
