Who has done what? Who would like to do what? What are the pro's and cons of your engine of choice.
If I ever stray from the turbo'd engine in my car (read- blow up) I think this would be something I may well consider. A V8 would be delightful, all that grunt and noise in such a tiny little car! However I feel like something revvy and nimble suits the 5! Thought it would be interesting to get some discussion going of budget options, dream options etc. etc.!

early mk2 1.8 into my 1994 mk1 - really worth doing if you want a bit of extra oomph, but you have to frankenstein it slightly with bits from mk1 and mk2 and find a way to actuate the VICS solenoid
i'd love an LS engine in there...but that's dreamland given their cost. i'd like to see a Miller cycle engine from a Xedos 9 in an mx5...although it would have to be mounted fairly low as it's a tall engine. basically a KLV6 with a "5th" stroke

Not done but a Honda S2000 engine would be good!

If I didn't use my 5 as a daily, and have another project car in the garage. I'd seriously consider doing an LS swap myself.

Have to admit I'd see a good V6 swap as far superior to an LS ... even though they are ally, even the lightest LS swaps add well over 100kg to the car. A good V6 will save weight over the standard MX lump, and the better modern V6 engines will give 2-300bhp as standard.

What are your thoughts regarding which engine to go with Russell? I came up with the ford v6 but after a bit of googling was swayed away from it!

Not one I've done, but one I'd very much like to do. They wake up massively with a decent sized turbo, even if they are on the portly side.

There was a firm who posted on nutz chucking the Ford v6 into a mk1. It's the later ford/jag/Lincoln motor available in 3ltr form, rather than the mx6/probe engine. My dad has one in his Morgan which goes well, 260bhp (ish) on a stock motor with a decent exhaust and ditching the ac etc. It's the same engine Noble use in their cars, although they have it in twin turbo form!

Sounds awesome! Perhaps if my turbo ever starts to feel boring I will have a look. I think I would rather go that route than look to forge my engine, I really miss the noise!

The KLV6 is OK, nice because it retains the Mazda link and obviously a few have been done so there is a decent amount of knowledge out there. If I'm honest the power is still a bit low, so I'd be looking at newer V6 engines like the Alfa 3.2, or the Toyota or Nissan 3.5. The Toyota engine is used by Lotus so there are Supercharger kits available too
