I have encountered some confuzzlement whilst wading the through the available options for replacement exhausts and I am hoping that someone who has swapped the exhaust system on a 1.8 will be able to remember what they ordered.
My car is a frankensteins mishmash monster 1.8 which once was an Aug '96 Merlot which at some point would have had a long cat from what I gather, although the VIN is slightly pre 3082 which could mean it was transitional. I have yet to meet another Merlot owner yet, not that it matters anyway because nothing on my car is as it was when it left the factory.
The problem is that I ordered a new catback and cat only to realise that my car has a mysterious non standard one piece manifold (presumably ebay japspeed or whatever) which does not fit either of the available catalytic converters long or short, both of which I have examples of in the garage at home without using the horrible shonkey scaffpole adaptor thing that the previous owner must have fabricated.
options are-
Just buy another new short cat to pass the MOT and continue using the pikey adaptor plate which is undesirable obviously but is by far the cheapest option.
IL motorsport/Mazda manifold from mx5parts - HOWEVER I need to confirm which type of downpipe is actually going to fit, preferably to the long cat I already have ready, otherwise it defeats the purpose of ordering a new manifold!

You might be able to find an exhaust fabricators that will weld up a cat so that it fits the required length as one piece

I'd go with the 2nd option if you want to keep the car.
also you could get a nicer manifold from moss. heh.

You might be able to find an exhaust fabricators that will weld up a cat so that it fits the required length as one piece It had crossed my mind actually. I also nearly reached for the hacksaw and TIG welder but it just feels wrong wielding cutty tools near an unsuspecting new cat! I would also have to modify every cat I buy, which seems to be a yearly occurrence which was why I am thinking about shiny manifolds...or rusty scaffpole adaptors... Thanks for your input people, it has greatly aided my thought process. Getting a new manifold is the correct thing to do here, and there is room on my credit card still even after the trip to 'Straya, however, the quick and drifty mentality has set in now as I just got out of a rather lengthy meeting at work. For the sake of less faffing and money expenditure to expedite an MOT pass early next week I may retain the car's shonky charm for a little longer. A shiny manifold will make my scutty filthy engine bay look rather odd I suspect. Hmmmmmm

The third option I suppose would be to retain the existing manifold as it is still OK and make up a slightly less shonkey bolt on adaptor OF MY VERY OWN, thus ENHANCING the car's already considerable shonkey charm, and I get to weld something. Yay welding.

Does the manifold look like it could be a standard item? Ie, mild steel, gearbox mounting bracket etc. I'm pretty sure mine was all one piece (the later mani is completely different to earlier ones remember)
I know you say it's non-standard, but part of me is wondering whether you're thinking that because it's one piece...

There is no mounting bracket and looks to be some sort of stainless. It could be standard but if it is I have yet to find any cat that will fit up to it as the joint points coff completely the wrong direction for the long cat I have here (assuming there is only one type) and all short cats will need a shonkey adaptor. I am thoroughly bewildered at this point. Each time I think I have discovered the last bodge on my car something else appears, usually at great expense to put right hahah.

I'm wrong anyway, my standard one was a 2 piece item. Just replace it with another and you'll know it's right then, hahaha, go for a JDM one and you'll know that you just need the shortest cat then, too.

My credit card is on the desk and my mouse pointer keeps hovering over that Jackson Racing manifold for 1.8. No mention of which cat it would need though. Has anybody actually got one of these fitted? If so which cat if you have one?

I will assume it is for the import 370mm cat
Best off messaging rob attwood on fb or message Moss to ask for sure
